How Much Does an Interior Designer Actually Cost?
Pricing is one of those topics that nobody in the design industry talks about clearly enough. You search online, find numbers that range from a few hundred to tens of thousands of dollars, and end up more confused than when you started. We believe homeowners deserve a straight answer, so here it is.
The Three Most Common Pricing Structures
Hourly Rate
Some designers charge by the hour, which typically ranges from $100 to $250 per hour depending on experience, market, and scope. This works well for consultations, smaller projects, or homeowners who want to stay hands-on and only need guidance at certain points in the process.
Flat Project Fee
A flat fee is agreed upon upfront for the full scope of work. This is popular for larger projects because it gives clients cost certainty. Depending on the size of the home and the depth of services, flat fees for full-service design in the North Atlanta area typically range from $5,000 to $30,000 or more. This usually covers everything from concept development through installation.
Percentage of Budget or Retail Markup
Some designers charge a percentage of the overall project budget, usually between 10 and 30 percent. Others operate on a markup model, where they purchase furnishings at trade pricing and charge retail, with the difference being their fee. Both models are common and legitimate, but it’s important to understand which model your designer uses so you can budget accurately.
What’s Typically Included in a Designer’s Fee?
A full-service fee generally covers:
• Initial consultation and project assessment
• Space planning and furniture layout
• Material, finish, and furniture selections
• Vendor coordination and ordering
• Project management through delivery and installation
• Final styling and photo-ready presentation
What it usually does not include: furniture, materials, construction, or contractor costs. Those are separate line items in the project budget.
What Should You Budget for the Overall Project?
This is where people often underestimate. The design fee is one part of the budget. The other part is everything you’re purchasing. A single well-furnished living room with quality pieces can range from $15,000 to $50,000 depending on size and selections. A full home furnishing project for a new build in the North Atlanta area commonly runs $80,000 to $200,000 or more, including furniture, window treatments, lighting, and accessories.
These numbers can feel significant, but keep in mind that quality pieces are investments. We work with clients to stretch budgets strategically, mixing investment pieces with more accessible options without sacrificing the look.
How to Get an Accurate Estimate
The best way to understand what design will cost for your specific project is to schedule a consultation. Every home is different. A designer who takes the time to understand your goals, your space, and your priorities will give you a much more useful number than any range you’ll find online.
